The Basics
General Questions About Reglazing
What is bathtub reglazing?
Bathtub reglazing is a professional surface restoration process where the existing tub is sanded, primed, and coated with a two component urethane finish. The tub stays in place. No plumbing, no demolition, no tile work. The result is a smooth, hard, factory quality surface that looks and feels like a new bathtub. The entire process takes 3 to 5 hours in a single visit and costs $400 to $650. Full details on our process page.
What is the difference between reglazing, refinishing, and resurfacing?
Nothing. Reglazing, refinishing, and resurfacing all refer to the same process: applying a new coating to an existing bathtub surface. Different companies use different terms, but the work is identical. In Toronto, "reglazing" is the most common term. The process involves sanding the existing surface, applying a bonding primer, and spraying multiple coats of urethane to create a new finish.
Is reglazing the same as painting a bathtub?
No. Paint is a single component product that sits on the surface and peels quickly under water exposure. Professional reglazing uses TopKote 2K urethane, a two component coating that chemically cures to a hard, non porous surface. It bonds mechanically to the sanded tub surface and withstands daily water contact, cleaning products, and normal use for 10 to 15 years. Hardware store bathtub paint kits are not the same thing. If you have had a bad experience with a paint kit or budget reglazer, see the fix a bad reglazing job page.
Can any bathtub be reglazed?
Most bathtubs can be reglazed. Cast iron, porcelain on steel, acrylic, and fiberglass tubs are all suitable. The tub needs to be structurally sound with no cracks through the material or soft spots in the floor. Surface damage like chips, stains, and discolouration are exactly what reglazing fixes. If you are unsure, text a photo of your tub to 647-930-2986 for a free assessment.
Is reglazing a permanent fix?
A professional reglazing with TopKote 2K urethane lasts 10 to 15 years under normal residential use. It is not permanent in the way a new tub is, but at $400 to $650 compared to $2,000 to $5,500 for replacement, most homeowners reglaze two or three times before they would ever need to consider a new tub. The 5 year written warranty covers peeling, chipping, and adhesion failure.
Why should I reglaze instead of replacing my bathtub?
Reglazing costs $400 to $650 and takes one visit. Replacement costs $2,000 to $5,500 and requires a plumber, a tile installer, demolition, disposal, and 5 to 14 days of work. Reglazing does not disturb the plumbing, the tile surround, or the bathroom floor. The tub is ready for use 48 hours after the work is done. For a bathtub that is structurally sound but cosmetically worn, reglazing is the faster, cheaper, and less disruptive option.
How It Works
Process and Duration
How long does bathtub reglazing take?
A standard bathtub reglazing takes 3 to 5 hours in a single visit. That includes masking and protection, surface preparation, priming, and multiple coats of TopKote 2K urethane. If the tub has a failed previous coating that needs to be stripped first, the job takes 4 to 6 hours. Jetted tubs take 4 to 5 hours due to the additional masking around jets.
What does the reglazing process involve?
The bathroom is masked and protected with drop cloths. The tub surface is sanded with 40 grit followed by 150 grit to create a mechanical bond profile. A bonding primer is applied. Then multiple coats of TopKote 2K urethane are sprayed using an HVLP gun. The coating builds up to a smooth, hard, factory quality finish. All materials and waste leave with Shawn. The tub is ready for water contact after 48 hours. See the full step by step process.
Do I need to remove my bathtub for reglazing?
No. The bathtub stays exactly where it is. Reglazing is done in place. No plumbing disconnection, no tile removal, no demolition. That is one of the main advantages over replacement. The work happens in your bathroom with the tub in its current position. Your tile, caulking, and surrounding fixtures stay untouched.
Will reglazing change the shape or size of my tub?
No. The urethane coating adds less than a millimetre of thickness to the tub surface. It does not change the tub dimensions, the drain alignment, or the overflow position. Everything fits exactly as it did before. Your existing drain hardware, overflow plate, and faucet all stay in place and function normally.
Can reglazing fix chips and cracks in my bathtub?
Chips are filled during surface preparation before the new coating is applied. The finished surface is smooth and uniform with no visible chip marks. Surface cracks in the coating or enamel are also covered. However, structural cracks that go through the tub material itself cannot be fixed with reglazing. If the tub is cracked through to the substrate, it needs replacement. Text a photo to 647-930-2986 and Shawn will tell you which situation you have.

Pricing
Cost and Value
How much does bathtub reglazing cost in Toronto?
A standard bathtub reglazing in Toronto costs $400 to $650. The price depends on the tub size, condition, and whether it needs a strip and redo of a previous failed coating. Tile surrounds, sinks, and additional fixtures are quoted separately. There are no travel fees anywhere in the Greater Toronto Area. Text photos of your tub to 647-930-2986 for an exact quote.
Is reglazing cheaper than replacing a bathtub?
Yes. Reglazing costs $400 to $650. Bathtub replacement costs $2,000 to $5,500 when you include the fixture, plumber, tile installer, demolition, and disposal. When you add lost use of the bathroom for 5 to 14 days versus 48 hours, reglazing costs roughly one fifth to one eighth of what replacement costs. The cost comparison works the same whether you have a cast iron, acrylic, or fiberglass tub.
Does reglazing increase home value?
Reglazing removes a visible cosmetic problem that makes a bathroom look dated or neglected. A clean, white, freshly coated bathtub photographs well for listings and presents well during showings. Buyers mentally subtract renovation costs when they see a worn tub. At $400 to $650, reglazing is one of the highest return pre listing fixes available. Real estate agents regularly recommend it before listings go live.
Is reglazing tax deductible for rental properties?
Reglazing is a surface restoration, not a capital improvement. Under CRA guidelines, repairs that restore something to its original condition are current expenses, deductible in the same tax year. Bathtub replacement is a capital expense depreciated over years. Shawn provides a proper invoice with his business registration and HST number for your records. Confirm the treatment of specific expenses with your accountant. More details on the landlord and property manager page.
Do you offer volume pricing for multiple tubs?
Yes. When multiple tubs are booked together, the per unit rate decreases because setup, travel, and material logistics are shared. Volume pricing applies to landlords with multiple rental units, hotels, condo buildings doing common area updates, and any project with more than one tub. Text the number of units and photos to 647-930-2986 for a volume quote.
Tub Types
Materials and Bathtub Types
Can you reglaze a cast iron bathtub?
Yes. Cast iron tubs are excellent candidates for reglazing because they are structurally strong and last for decades. The porcelain enamel surface wears down over time, but the cast iron underneath remains solid. Reglazing restores the surface without the cost or difficulty of removing a tub that can weigh 300 to 500 pounds. Full details on the cast iron bathtub reglazing page.
Can you reglaze an acrylic or fiberglass bathtub?
Yes. Both acrylic and fiberglass tubs can be reglazed. These materials are common in homes built from the 1980s onward and tend to yellow, scratch, and lose their finish over time. The surface preparation is adjusted for the material, and TopKote 2K urethane bonds well to both when properly sanded and primed. The result is the same smooth, hard, white finish.
Can you reglaze a porcelain bathtub?
Yes. Porcelain on steel tubs are one of the most commonly reglazed bathtub types. The original porcelain enamel chips and stains over time, but the steel body remains structurally sound. Reglazing covers the worn enamel with a new urethane finish that is more resistant to chipping than the original porcelain.
Can you reglaze a jacuzzi or jetted tub?
Yes. Jacuzzi and jetted tubs can be reglazed. The process takes 4 to 5 hours instead of the standard 3 to 5 because the jets require additional masking to protect the mechanical components. The jets themselves are not coated. The tub basin and walls are reglazed around them.
Can you reglaze a clawfoot bathtub?
Yes. Clawfoot tubs are ideal candidates for reglazing because they are almost always cast iron and structurally sound despite being decades old. The interior basin is reglazed to restore the surface. The exterior and feet are not coated during a standard interior reglazing but can be addressed separately if needed.
Health and Safety
Safety Questions
Is bathtub reglazing safe?
Yes, when done by a professional with proper equipment and ventilation. Shawn uses an HVLP spray system that minimizes overspray and works with proper respiratory protection. The bathroom is masked and sealed during the process. The cured coating is inert and completely safe for daily use, including for children, pets, and anyone with sensitivities. Professional reglazing is a controlled process, not a DIY project with uncertain materials.
Are there fumes during reglazing?
Yes. The urethane coating produces fumes during application. Shawn ventilates the work area during the process. You should stay out of the bathroom while the work is being done and for a few hours after completion. By the time the 48 hour cure is complete, the coating is fully cured and there is no residual odour. Open a window in the bathroom during the cure period if possible.
Is the reglazed surface safe for children and pets?
Once the 48 hour cure is complete, the surface is fully hardened and inert. It is safe for children, pets, and anyone with chemical sensitivities. The cured TopKote 2K urethane does not leach chemicals, does not off gas, and is safe for daily water contact. Keep children and pets out of the bathroom during the reglazing and during the 48 hour cure period.
Is a reglazed bathtub slippery?
A freshly reglazed tub has a smooth surface similar to a new bathtub. It is not more slippery than a factory finished tub. For additional traction, use a rubber backed bath mat that sits by gravity. Do not use suction cup mats, as the suction can damage the coating over time. This is covered in the aftercare guide Shawn provides after every job.
Booking
Scheduling and Special Situations
How far in advance do I need to book?
Most jobs are booked within 3 to 7 days. During peak seasons like spring and summer, the schedule fills faster. If you have a specific date you need the work completed by, such as a tenant move in or a listing date, text Shawn as early as possible. Same week bookings are sometimes available depending on the schedule. There is no booking fee or deposit required to hold a date.
Can you reglaze a bathtub in a condo?
Yes. Shawn works in condos across the GTA regularly. The equipment is portable and does not require any building modifications. If your condo board requires proof of insurance or a letter from the contractor, Shawn provides that documentation before the scheduled date. Elevator booking and parking details are handled in advance so there are no delays on the day of the job. More on the condo reglazing page.
Can you reglaze the bathtub and tile surround together?
Yes. The tub and tile surround can be done in the same visit. The tile is cleaned, sanded, and coated with the same TopKote 2K urethane system used on the tub. Doing both together costs less than booking them separately because setup and masking overlap. The result is a uniform white finish across the tub and tile that looks like a single installed piece.
My bathtub was previously reglazed and is peeling. Can you fix it?
Yes. A failed previous reglazing is one of the most common jobs Shawn handles. The old coating is stripped down to the original surface, which adds 1 to 2 hours to the job. The tub is then resurfaced from scratch using the full preparation and coating process. The result is the same as a first time reglazing. Full details on the fix a bad reglazing job page.
What areas do you serve?
Shawn serves Toronto, Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, East York, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, Oshawa, Pickering, Ajax, and Whitby. There are no travel fees anywhere in the Greater Toronto Area. Every job includes a written contract as required by the Ontario Consumer Protection Act for services over $50, with a 10 day cooling off period. Request a quote for your area.
